Refining a Model for an Inter-segmental Learning Network: Engaging Community College Students with Research University Faculty to Promote Persistence in STEM

Abstract

"The "Saturdays with Scientists (SWS)" model, developed by the University of California, Irvine FOCUS MSP was refined for the 2009-2010 academic year using survey tools and information presented at the 2010 NSF Learning Network Conference. The refined model, which placed more of an emphasis on community-building, has served as a catalyst for inter-segmental networking among community college students, STEM faculty and staff from 2- and 4-year institutions, and community college executive leadership. Within this model, student success is measured by increased interest and persistence in STEM disciplines. This session will explain how lessons learned from earlier project activities evolved into the SWS model, which has served as a framework for future collaborations between partners."
